Review: Apple's ultra-thin MacBook Air

Weighing slightly less than a size-zero supermodel, and much slimmer with it, the MacBook Air has created a bit of a buzz since its release. That's hardly surprising, as Apple… More

Obama Under Fire for Terri Schiavo Remark

Scientific evidence, as usual, is of no consequence to those of you who would prefer to believe hysterical talk-radio hosts. I was going to ask how anyone could look at the autopsy results and draw any other conclusion, then I thought about the mountains of evidence of evolution, and decided not to bother. .

Transcribing in Linux: Easy As 1, 2, 3...

I'm fairly sure that this is not open source software. My reasoning for stating this, since I have yet to see anything even close to Express Scribe, in the open source world as of yet. Much like MainActor is to those who want entry level software for decent video editing, I see Express Scribe as filling this same need, and perhaps even hitting a more important piece of the Linux puzzle.

iTALC promotes learning on a classroom network
iTALC, or Intelligent Teaching and Learning with Computers, is a didactical tool designed to assist teachers. Despite its name, the tool itself isn't a learning environment. It's meant to let teachers control their students' computers in a computer-driven classroom setting. Thanks to its powerful remote desktop control features, simple setup, and lack of cost, it's a potential remote assistance tool for any type of network.

Cats gain confidence, even in defeat

Ramon Harris added a career-high 12 points. Each was "the best he's ever been," Gillispie said.

Stevenson acknowledged that Tennessee's lack of a dominating presence around the basket helped.

"But they're all pretty much bigger than I am," Stevenson said. "I'll have that problem every evening."

Tennessee forward Wayne Chism credited Stevenson's effort. "He's long," the UT player said. "You can get anything if you're that long. He worked hard for those rebounds. And I worked hard to keep him off."

Derrick Jasper equaled a career high with two three-pointers. Noting his 3-for-14 three-point shooting last season, Jasper said, "I'm not scared shooting the ball."

Harris equaled a career-high with three made free throws and three steals.

Butter under lock and key as prices soar

Australian bakeries are the latest in a long line of victims of increased global demand for dairy products and the country's long-running drought -- with the all-important ingredient butter becoming harder to find and more expensive.

Nickl, who owns the Gumnut Patisserie in the Southern Highlands southwest of Sydney, said he orders butter every week from three different suppliers "and (we) just hope and take whatever arrives".

"It's a commodity that's incredibly hard to get," he said. "You'll go for weeks and weeks with a specific supplier not being able to give me any."

Nickl said he noticed the butter shortage begin to bite in June 2007, just as the country was praying for rain to end the worst drought in living memory.

Nailed from every angleSince the beginning of last year, the price of butter has tripled, he said.

lush invite to network

There is also the opportunity to do some face-to-face networking with speakers and FT editors at specially arranged briefings. In effect, the FT is creating a virtual extension of its conference business. “This is very much about building niche communities and strengthening loyalty to existing products that we already have," says Jayne Van Hoen, the FT's global director of conferences and events. “What I think is interesting is that the FT is bundling the social networking in with a number of things," says Rebecca Jennings, principal analyst at Forrester Research.

But also interesting to media people is the choice of the paid model, and it may be the choice that other niche networking sites choose as well. Social networks are hugely popular but generally they've struggled at the revenue end.
