Bella Vita goes belly up

Originally, delays were related to construction bids coming in higher than expected. Then the project was held up by a complaint to the state Bureau of Labor and Industries against the developer and MURA for not providing the prevailing wage rate for a public project.

BOLI ruled prevailing wage rates, which were higher than the developer was anticipating, must be paid. Coupled with the national downturn in the real estate market and the mortgage-lending crisis, the project just never got its footing again.

Bella Vita was estimated to cost $25 million when it was unveiled in 2005. The three six-story buildings were to consist of about 64 residential units, 55,000 square feet of office space and 19,000 square feet of commercial space. Occupancy was originally planned for the first condominiums in September 2006.

Oscar Events

It was my first time seeing the film, which has been on the festival circuit since Telluride back in September. I don't think I can even begin to qualify it. I'm pretty sure it's an undeniable work of art, but beyond that, I need time to let it soak in and, most assuredly, I'll need another viewing. I didn't even mosey over to Haynes during the reception because, quite frankly, I have no idea what I would have said to him. In any case, my opinion isn't what's important. What IS important is how floored the viewers in attendance were. There was even a cryer. Yeah, a cryer. Michael Mann was in attendance, said he enjoyed the film, and spent quite a while making the rounds during the reception. Most enthusiastic, however, was Ben Foster, who could not contain his sheer glee, not only at "I'm Not There," but at what he calls a "great year for movies." He had recently come from seeing the Coen brothers' "No Country for Old Men," which had him on a high to go along with the Chivas Regal he was throwing back.

Oscar worthy: Our readers, not the Academy, make these movie ...

Another tie, folks, and both are Oscar nominees for their performances. Clooney's title character is a corporate controversy "fixer" who begins to develop a conscience, while in "Blood" Day-Lewis plays Daniel Plainview, an oil baron who plummets into the darkness of his own corruption.

Reader's comments: "There's more to acting than reciting cleverly written lines. Clooney's body language throughout this film and especially during the closing minute ... set his performance above other very good lead actors this year." -- James Deck, Valparaiso.

Critics' comments: "Quite possibly Clooney's best effort to date." -- Pete Vonder Haar, Film Threat, regarding "Michael Clayton."

"Daniel Day-Lewis' portrayal is not just the performance of the year -- there will be injustice if he doesn't win an Oscar -- but a creation of awesome proportions." -- Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal, regarding "There Will Be Blood"

Oscar nominations: 7 for "Clayton" and 8 for "Blood" -- including Best Picture nominations for both films and Best Actor noms for both actors.

The following entry criteria for the 2008 Olympic Tennis Event will now be used in both the mens and womens competitions: The official world rankings will be used as the basis for determining the top 56 direct acceptances in the 64-player singles draw, subject to limitations outlined below as well as existing eligibility requirements. Depending on the singles rankings of their players, nations can be eligible for up to four entries into the singles and up to two doubles teams.
