Scotland mourns O'Donnell's death

The 35-year-old club captain was taken off the pitch at Fir Park on a stretcher in the closing stages of the Scottish Premier League match, which his side won 5-3.

Motherwell's next two matches, against Hibernian on Wednesday, and Celtic at the weekend, have been postponed.

"The players, the supporters, every one inside the executive are devastated and absolutely dumbfounded by the event of Phil's death," manager Mark McGhee said on Sunday.

"We had a meeting this morning with the players and obviously they have taken it very, very badly and we are going to have to help them through that."

O'Donnell, who started his career at Motherwell before stints with Celtic and Sheffield Wednesday, was about to be substituted at Fir Park against Dundee United but collapsed before he could leave the field.

Cheerleader of the Week

I love OU, but I almost went to: I applied to 10 schools, but I ultimately wanted to go wherever I could continue my cheerleading career in college. Cheerleading is, has been, and always will be a passion of mine, so it was really important for me to achieve my dream of being a college cheerleader. I decided I wanted to stay in Texas or close to Texas. So I tried out for cheerleading at OU and Texas Tech. Both are great schools, and have great cheerleading and football programs. But I decided to go to OU with my two best friends.

2. My favorite class is: My favorite subject is math. In college so far, my favorite class has been Macro Economics. I really understood the concepts and worked hard to get an A in the class. Understanding the concepts and mastering this class was very satisfying to me.

Rob Legato advances motion-capture technique

With Bob Zemeckis' "Beowulf" currently in theaters and James Cameron's "Avatar" now filming in New Zealand for 2009 release, the art of performance capture is finally making its next evolutionary leap. Left behind are the dead-eyed elves, robotic movements and murky teeth of the first performance capture feature, "The Polar Express."

Visual effects master Rob Legato, who put the first motion-capture humans on the deck of the Titanic and pioneered a new mo-cap technique for "Avatar," is an ardent believer in harnessing the technology within -- not apart from -- the live-action realm.

The VFX maverick has quit working for major FX houses like Digital Domain, where he spent six years supervising effects on such pics as "Apollo 13" and "Titanic." A passionate believer in the do-it-yourself approach, Legato is no longer willing to stay within the corporate confines of VFX behemoths like Digital Domain or Sony Imageworks, where shots are so rigidly pre-planned, storyboarded, pre-approved and budgeted that any changes down the line cost serious extra money.

Growing business forges own niche

Lucette Crane Systems has not only managed to fight off low-cost competition from China, the small business based in Oakley is thriving.

Founded in 2002 by Anderson Township resident Jerry Burck, the company opened with two employees in 2002 in a rented factory on Marburg Avenue that had 50-foot ceilings and truck access.

Weld by weld, day by day, those two employees turned slabs of half-inch-thick steel from China into overhead, heavy-duty industrial cranes that weighed between 5 tons and 55 tons.

State to get rare stone artifacts

People who found them did not know until recent years what they were."We had no idea," Abernethy said. "We didn't get too excited at first, just thinking they were kind of crude. They're not like real nice arrowheads."Bruce Huckell, a University of New Mexico anthropology professor, became aware of the discovery a few years ago and identified the artifacts for what they were, Abernethy said.Huckell declined to be interviewed, saying he was barred from doing so because of a commitment to the National Geographic Society, which has provided research funding. The society declined to allow Huckell to immediately be interviewed.Swenson said the Clovis artifacts are not the first to be discovered in North Dakota; there are some in private collections. But she said it will be the first time there will be such prehistoric items on public display, and the small site in Golden Valley County where they were found is the first documented Clovis site in the state."There's much to be learned since there are relatively few sites (nationwide)," she said.

In Age of High-Tech, Are Americans Losing Touch with DIY Skills?

Science fiction author Robert A. Heinlein once wrote: “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." That's a tall order. Although I can only do some of those things, I approve of the principle. Nowadays, though, we're specializing more. A popular Internet essay is titled: “I Can't Do One-Quarter of the Things My Father Can." Are hands-on skills—building things, fixing things, operating machines and so on—really in decline? I think so. SAT scores provide a record of academic performance, but there's no equivalent archive for tracking handiness.
