Homebuyers hit by 'near prime' crunch

On Friday, Cheltenham & Gloucester said it would no longer lend to borrowers who had less than a 10% deposit.

It follows Nationwide Building Society, which has raised rates for new borrowers with less than a 25% deposit. Those with just a 10% deposit will now pay 0.20 of a percentage point more on their deal compared with last month.

Several other lenders have also pulled mortgage deals that offered more than 100% of a property's value. Meanwhile, the market for sub-prime borrowers has all but disappeared.

'Nationwide has effectively priced itself out of the first-time buyers market,' says Ray Boulger at mortgage broker John Charcol. 'Other lenders will follow. It's bad news for borrowers.'

Keith Mullins, 35, and his partner Leigh Genery, 29, moved into a new house in Welling, Kent, in January.

Wal-Mart unleashes employees in blogs

Microsoft is one of Wal-Mart's biggest suppliers. But that did not stop the Wal-Mart employee in charge of buying computers from panning Microsoft's newest operating system, Vista.

"My life has not changed dramatically" because of the new system, he wrote on his blog. "Well, for that matter, it hasn't changed at all."

His public burst of candor was not isolated. On the same blog, a video game buyer for Wal-Mart slammed a "Star Wars" film as a "debacle," even though Wal-Mart still sells the movie.

Known for its strict, by-the-books culture - accepting a cup of coffee from a supplier can be a firing offense - Wal-Mart is now encouraging employees who do the buying to speak frankly, even critically, about the products the chain carries.

An unusual new Web site by Wal-Mart, which was quietly created during the holiday shopping season, has become a forum for unvarnished rants about gadgets, raves about new video games and advice on selecting environmentally sustainable food.

The Matt Damon follow-up beat out competition from movies including Best Picture Academy Award winner No Country For Old Men to win the People's Choice section of the Richard Attenborough Film Awards.

Several thousand people selected their film of 2007 from a shortlist of 30 movies and then submitted their votes via 25 regional British media outlets.

That's why one of my favorite Christmas presents not only helped me organize those electric items, but also made a corner of my kitchen look better.

The multi-charging unit, painted white, just like my woodwork, fits neatly in a space on the counter and hides a power strip inside. I plug in the unsightly chargers and all I can see are the tiny plug-ins.

At night, we line up our electronic neccessities and know right where they are every morning, charged up and ready to go.

It makes me feel so twenty-first century.
