WSU's Tony Bennett could have tough choice ahead

He said flatly he wouldn't talk about it.

You'd assume Bennett would listen. Indiana drips with history, from its five national titles to its candy-stripe warmup pants. There's a reason they made a movie called "Hoosiers."

Just as there's history at Indiana, there's history with the Bennett family there. Kathi Bennett, Tony's older sister and the member of the family Dick Bennett has said might be the best at it, was head coach of the Hoosiers' women from 2000 to 2005 before resigning and getting out of the business.

Indiana would offer Tony Bennett a bunch more money than the Cougars can; they're paying him $800,000 annually. Bloomington, at 70,000 population, would present a college town but not one as remote as Pullman. No more would he have to contend with the nettlesome travel issues in and out of WSU.

Intractable, implacable, unavoidable change

I had a great visit today with an undergraduate journalism class at Washington State. The "professor" was former SR reporter Ben Shors who took a voluntary buyout last year. Ben is now teaching at WSU as an adjunct faculty member and also is on staff as advisor to The Evergreen, the student newspaper.

Ben's class was as well prepared for our discussion as any class I've visited in recent years. It was an exhilarating visit.

After the class I met with The Evergeen staff and other student journalists for a wide-ranging brown bag session that kept coming back to what these students need to do to prepare for careers in journalism.

Inevitably, I fall back on some of my own "war" stories to illustrate my views. So I talked a bit about the changes I've experienced since becoming a professional journalist in 1973.

Microsoft moves deeper into the software services arena

Microsoft also is working on a bundle of Microsoft-hosted business services, which it is calling its Business Productivity Online Suite. That bundle will include Microsoft-hosted Exchange, SharePoint, OCS and Live Meeting.

Microsoft has added a "provisioning layer" to Exchange and SharePoint to make them multi-tenant-ready, explained Eron Kelly, Director of Product Management for Business Online Services. And it is adding a new, per-user license subscription as a new pricing option for the forthcoming release of its Microsoft Online wares. Microsoft is going to allow customers who have purchased licenses for Microsoft's Exchange and SharePoint Server software (not the Microsoft-hosted versions of these products) to trade-in license credits for Microsoft Online managed service versions of these products; or a mix of on-premise and Microsoft-hosted versions.

CLEARWATER, Fla., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- When it came time for CNN to plan its coverage of the 2008 election campaign, the decision was made: Have Parliament Coach and Frontline Communications build the Ultimate News Bus.

During the 2004 election, CNN experimented with Hank Williams' former touring bus, a 1980 Eagle. That coach required a separate satellite truck for linking to the network. It provided an opportunity to see whether a bus was a useful feature in the network's campaign coverage. The venture was a success, but it triggered thoughts of how it might be done better.

Bill Gates: SharePoint Conference 2008

What category is this all about? All of you here probably understand that five years ago people would have said there were many of these different categories for software running up on the server. And to me it's a lot like Office was, and here you'd have to go back more than 10 years ago, where people would think, which employees should have word processing, which should have spreadsheet, which should have presentation? What Microsoft Office did, by pulling those things together, and pricing it so that it was attractive for all the employees, it just became something that you took for granted.

You could take for granted that a new hire had learned Microsoft Office, just as part of their college experience. You could take for granted that sending a PowerPoint presentation, or an Excel spreadsheet to people in another part of your organization, or to a partner that you were working with, that would be very straightforward, it would simply be something people were familiar with.

Detroit Council to Vote on Mayor

A prosecutor is investigating whether Kilpatrick and former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty lied under oath about having an affair during a trial in a whistle blower lawsuit. The mayor has been dogged by recent media reports about steamy text messages the two exchanged that suggest an affair.
