CES: LaCie unveils new hard drives, LCD display

LaCie on Monday introduced five new products including desktop and portable hard drives and a new LCD display aimed at professionals. Some products are available today; others are coming later this month and in February.

The LaCie d2 Quadra is a redesigned quadruple-interface desktop hard drive. It features USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and external Serial ATA (eSATA) connections. Featuring a large surface area, the external drive dissipates heat without needing a fan. It's available now in capacities ranging from 320GB to 1 terabyte (TB), at prices starting at $189.

The Little Big Disk Quadra is a quad-interface drive designed for portability. It's fast enough to handle video editing and digital content creation on the road, but sports an aluminum heat-sink design that cools without needing a fan.

BEA’s stance on Oracle deal pummeled

The reaction to BEA's rejection of a $17 a share takeover offer from Oracle is brutal.

Of course, billionaire Carl Icahn has issues. But analysts aren't too thrilled either. Either BEA knows something the rest of us don't or is delusional.

A sampling of comments:

Credit Suisse analyst Jason Maynard, in a research note titled 'Hope isn't a strategy,' wrote:

BEA's shares could easily trade back to the $12-$14 level absent activist pressure and Oracle's bid. While BEA has reduced expenses, it still hasn't offered a sustainable strategy and demonstrated consistent execution to warrant a standalone share price above $17 let alone $21. We think the $17 per share proposal is more than reasonable, and certainly worth the time and effort of BEA's management team to begin earnest negotiations.

Carotidynia could be causing neck pain

The pain is typically dull, throbbing, continuous, and localized over the area high in the front of the neck where you can feel your pulse in the carotid artery. The pain may radiate to the jaw, cheek, eye, or ear on the same side. Symptoms are frequently made worse by swallowing, chewing, and moving the head to the opposite side. The main physical sign is tenderness when the carotid artery is pressed. Sometimes, there is prominence or throbbing of the carotid pulse. Although several serious conditions should be excluded, most cases are not dangerous. Severity varies from mild to agonizing. A history of migraine headaches may be present. In other cases, a history of previous sore throat, upper respiratory infection, oral conditions, or recent dental procedures is reported.

That's the ballgame: Toshiba bows out of HD DVD

Many for example know the playstation name as a gaming console and one that has proven its worth over time. The idea of having it as a blu-ray player isn't that attractive to someone who has zero interesting in gaming. I doubt the thought would have even crossed their mind. What would a salesman say if someone said they were looking for a blu-ray player? Should they recommend a playstation? Surly not. They would offer the customer several solutions. I know you said yourself you are not a ps3 fanboy and I accept that because of the effort and sense you put into your post instead of bashing and throwing insults around. But that said there are those here that just preach PS3 PS3 PS3 and just cant understand there is more to blu-ray than their precious investment.

Score: 0 .

Tiger Direct lists the Toshiba HD-A3 for $129.99

Even with all the recent announcements, HD-DVD is still selling 38% of the market, same as they've been doing the past several months. This fire sale could really make things interesting. All it needs to do is hang in another year. By then there'll be so many players out there the market will be too big to can no matter how well Blu Ray is doing. .
