Silicon Still Solar’s Biggest Foe
China-based LDK Solar's stock was down more than 6 percent at the market close, and shares of California-based SunPower dropped nearly 4 percent. New Energy Finance analyst Nathaniel Bullard said those solar companies with silicon-supply contracts in place will fare better than those without. The research firm predicts the limited supply of the critical material will continue until mid-2009, when lower silicon prices should pass through to lower module prices. In the meantime, Mr. Bullard said the global market for silicon has little transparency and prices are highly discretionary. That means companies with longer-term relationships get better prices, and new entrants have little bargaining power because the deals are hidden, he said. .
Talk of the Town: Happy birthday, Oscar!
So, Oscar will celebrate his 80th birthday this Sunday and some of the writers will actually be attending his party since the Writers Guild of America strike has ended and the dust is starting to settle in Tinseltown. With any luck, your favorite movie will walk away with the golden prize, but as in the past, some of the best pictures never receive Best Picture Oscars. A prime example would be "Citizen Kane."Though it was nominated in nine categories in 1941, "Citizen Kane" won only Best Original Screenplay for Orson Welles and Herman J.Mankiewicz.According to the folks at filmschoolrejects.com, it was rumored that whenever the film's name was mentioned, guffaws were heard around the room because the powerful newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hearst, on whose life the film was alleged to be based, threatened voters with the old adage, "You'll never work in this town again." An interesting note: Kane's editor was future Oscar-winning director Robert Wise.

Baptist College Opens Door to Non-Baptist Christian Groups
The Baylor Board of Regents revised the university wide organizational religion policy on Friday, welcoming Christian groups in addition to Baptist ones to meet and be chartered at Baylor, according to the school news publication, The Lariat. In an editorial on Tuesday, The Lariat applauded the "overdue" revision, noting that Methodists, Catholics and Presbyterians among other groups have been treated like "Christian step-children" for too long. The revision will make the university "more welcoming" of other Christian organizations, Baylor University president John M. Lilley said, as reported by the student publication. Baylor students had passed a bill early last year in an effort to grant non-Baptist Christian groups the same privileges as Baptist organizations on campus.

The Daily Californian
Going down under didn't keep the No. 5 Cal women's swimming team down in the rankings. Shortly after ringing in the new year, the Bears left for Melbourne, Australia, on a two-week tour-a vacation as well as a time for competition. In the Victorian State Championships, Cal competed against 73 other clubs in a 50-meter pool in the Melbourne Aquatic Centre, and the team was excited about the change of scenery. "It was really nice. The facilities in America are nice too, but swimming is like football over there," junior Lauren Rogers said. "The pool that we swam in was amazing and it was great to be in the environment where swimming is more of a spectator sport." But now the team is back at Spieker Aquatics, where Cal will host No. 4 Arizona and No. 17 Arizona State this weekend in the last two home meets of the season, and the final home meets for the three graduating seniors-Emily Silver, Rachel Ridgeway and Kelly Stravers.
